Saturday January 27th - The weather was partly cloudy today with a high of 73 degrees.
They've already started setting up big tents all over town. Here's one that's just north of the Ramada Inn on Oracle Road (Mineral and Fossil Blvd). Many of the major motels set up tents to accommodate the overflow of rocks and dealers from their rooms. Those are chunks of petrified tree they've set out in front of this one. Yes, they're for sale.
Ray sends greetings from the Show to the Rocks-and-Fossils list!
There was a lot of preparatory activity going on in this tent. Twenty-five people or so were busy bringing in specimens and setting up tables and displays. A fork lift was constantly shuttling in crates and barrels of rocks and fossils from trucks waiting to be unloaded outside. In another corner of the tent, some workers had set up a table factory and were busy cranking out tables made from sheets of plywood and two by fours. There was a lot of hammering and sawing going on. Scenes like these are occurring all over town. Very soon there will be thousands of tables in Tucson full of minerals, gems, fossils, meteorites and rocks of every conceivable description. It takes a lot of work to set up the Show. Just watching this small sample of it plum tuckered me out!
