I was informed by Freedland's staff this turquoise carving weighed 121 pounds and that it is considered to be the largest in the world. The rough turquoise was taken to the Philippines in the early 1980s where three carvers worked on it for a year and a half. The finished work was reported to be featured in an article in the July 1985 issue of Lapidary Journal if you happen to have one of those lying about and want to read more about it. It was displayed at the Show on a rotating stand in a mirrored case and was overwhelming to try to take in all at once. You had to spend a while looking it over and concentrating on specific areas in turn to really appreciate all the detail and work that went into the carving. Below are some close-ups showing off some of the detail incorporated in this unique masterpiece.
