Shown at left is an overview of a remarkable turquoise carving that was displayed at the Main Event by Freedland's Jewelry. Freedland's staff related the turquoise it was fashioned from was found during 1962 in turquoise deposits of the Little Hachita Mountains in New Mexico, which were known and mined for turquoise all the way back to prehistoric times by Native Americans.

I was informed by Freedland's staff this turquoise carving weighed 121 pounds and that it is considered to be the largest in the world. The rough turquoise was taken to the Philippines in the early 1980s where three carvers worked on it for a year and a half. The finished work was reported to be featured in an article in the July 1985 issue of Lapidary Journal if you happen to have one of those lying about and want to read more about it. It was displayed at the Show on a rotating stand in a mirrored case and was overwhelming to try to take in all at once. You had to spend a while looking it over and concentrating on specific areas in turn to really appreciate all the detail and work that went into the carving.
