Tucson Show Reports
Greetings Rockhounds, and welcome to www.tucsonshow.com, an extension of Bob's Rock Shop and dedicated domain where I present my Online Show Reports from the Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows. "Tucson" is legendary in rockhounding circles and is by far the largest Gem and Mineral Show on Earth. It's not coincidental that I called Tucson, Arizona home for over two decades. :) Greetings from Tucson provides a gateway to a wealth of Tucson and Arizona visitor's information and links, including information on transportation, accommodations, restaurants and entertainment, Tucson rock shops and dealers, maps, popular Arizona and Tucson tourist attractions, state parks, Arizona geology, and much more. The 2008 report will be my 13th annual online Tucson Show report and I will be making a special effort to share what I've seen and learned at the 2008 Show with you starting up towards the middle of February. If you haven't already, be sure and subscribe to my Tucson Show Email List to receive emailed site update and report related notifications. The March-April 1996 issue of the Mineralogical Record presented an editorial titled "Mineral Collecting in the Cyber* Age" authored by Terry Wallace. In his editorial Terry prognosticated a revolution in mineral collecting (and marketing) via the Internet. Needless to say I was honored and pleased that Terry pointed to my 'Zine for rockhounds, Bob's Rock Shop, as a vanguard and pioneering web site of the dawning revolution. The revolution has been far sweeping and the years ensuing the MR editorial have witnessed the birth and exponential growth of a continuous online show serving Internet faring rockhounds. Some predict an inevitable negative impact on the attendance and growth of conventional shows due to the Internet, but I don't see that happening. I believe that the Internet will have a facilitating effect on conventional shows by stimulating interest and participation at the general level. In fact, major shows present opportunities for savvy Internet dealers to exploit transient windows of opportunity provided by the physical coming together of the rocks and their fellow dealers. Rocks are now being marketed and sold online from the Tucson and Denver Gem and Mineral Shows while the physical proximities and Internet venues intersect and commingle. Hybrid sites striving to differentiate themselves from now ubiquitous online rock shops through virtual shows are vanguarding new marketing strategies, business models, and opportunities for collectors to acquire specimens from more direct sources. For every rockhound who makes it to the Tucson Show at least once in their lives, there are many more who never will, and few are fortunate enough to attend world class shows regularly. I hope that my own efforts in reporting on these shows will serve to both inform and entertain you, and encourage your own pilgrimage and direct participation.
